World Hepatitis Day
World Hepatitis Day is celebrated worldwide on 28th July every year to create awareness on this deadly disease called “Hepatitis” and its five types and also to encourage people to prevent, protect ,treat and save their lives from the same.
Worldwide many NGOs and different organisations organise different programmes to create awareness during this period. HOPE Initiative also comes out with different innovative month long programmes every year tocommemorate the day.
Activities with Barbers
On the 18th of July, Hope initiative held a program with the barbers at UP Tourism,auditorium. Close to 400 barbers proactively participated in the program. Since the barbers are one of the key stakeholders and may play a crucial role in both preventing and spreading certain types of Hepatitis, such as Hepatitis C, the program was definitely called for. The program drew the attention of the barbers with a movie. The movie highlighted the critical condition in which patients find themselves if they are not treated in time.
Dr. Piyali also touched upon two critical areas. One was on the need for Hepatitis B vaccination and the interval at which they must be taken (three doses: the second 1 month after the first and the third 6 months after the second). The other was of drug abuse and how this group was susceptible to hepatitis B and C owing to use of the same and sometimes, contaminated needles.
Nurses & Paramedical Students Meet
Students of nursing and paramedical science were gathered at GanaSansthan to join the awareness programme organised by HOPE Initiative.Dr.JyotiGodiyal( Faculty St. Mary’s College of Nursing) gave a presentation on management of bio medical waste . Dr.GourdasChoudhuri ex-head of Dept. of Gastroenterology SGPGI invited people who have been successful in conquering this deadly disease. As these brave people shared their experiences, it was a unique learning through live interaction for theawareness campaigns.
Awareness Campaign in Schools
Hope Initiative collaborated with 100 schools across the city and conducted informative sessions on Hepatitis, displaying posters and even showing the Hope documentary to students.
Hope Initiative has always championed prevention and early detection. In this spirit several screening camps were planned on the 25th and 28th of July. Screening camps were held in 5 places on the 25th of July. These were Sewa Hospital, Lokbandh Raj Narayan SanyuktChikitsalaya, Era’s lucknow Hospital, Vivekanand Polyclinic & Mayo Medical Centre
At these screening camps were for detecting Hepatitis B and C were done for the medical, paramedical staff and OPD patients at the selected hospitals. The cases that tested positive were separately noted so that guidance for treatment can also be given. Those who demanded vaccination were also kept in contact for future intervention.
Besides the screening, Hope Initiative team distributed thousands of leaflets for awareness generation so that the prevalence of Hepatitis may reduce.
Since youths are the torch bearers of the nation ,to create awareness among the youths of Lucknow, HOPE Initiative in collaboration with department of Social Work, Lucknow Universityorganized a Hepatitis Awareness Programme, at the hall of department of Public Adminstration, Lucknow.University. The event started with a short movie on Hepatitis.
3 Speakers from Lucknow University delivered speech on some very relevant and important topics such as Socio -Economic implication of Hepatitis Infection , whether today’s youths are really health conscious or not and so on.
Vice Chancellor of Lucknow University Sri. S . P. Singh in his speech urged the Dept. of Social Work to join hands with HOPE Initiative in organizing vaccination camps in Lucknow University. Dr. Anup Kumar Bhatiya conducted the event.
Through an interactive session with the people who have been cured of this disease, Dr. GourdasChoudhuri appreciated their courage and felicitated them.
HOD Dept. of Social Work Prof. D. K. Singh and HOD Dept. of Public Administration were honoured for their cooperation in making this event a success.
