The HOPE Initiative was conceptualized when a team visited the Kendriya Vidyalaya branch within the SGPGI campus with its health promotion programmes for the students. The tremendous response received from this school gave birth to the idea of promoting health awareness in schools throughout the city. As a result, an organization by the name of HOPE Initiative – Health Oriented Programmes and Education, was established in November 2004,  Dr. G. Choudhuri, Prof. and Head Department of Gastroenterology SGPGI, and a group of like minded citizens like Justice DK Trivedi, Dr. UC Ghoshal, Mr. Kiron Chopra, Mr. Elton D’Souza, Mrs. Manju Tayal, Mrs. Sandhya Singh and Mrs. Surabhi Kapoor this NGO has been making efforts by conducting various educational programmes in many schools and colleges in the city, cutting across the social strata. HOPE stands for Health Oriented Programmes and Education and its mission is to help create awareness, discover, share new information and adopt innovative strategies to promote health of students, their families and society.

Some of the institutes touched so far are La Martinere College, Isabella Thoburn College, Kendriya Vidhyalaya SGPGI, St. Paul’s College, Colvin Taluqdar College, Delhi public School and Study Hall College.

HOPE makes a conscious effort to spread its message in an interesting, entertaining and interactive manner. It has conducted various health quizzes, debates, and poster painting competitions, in which children were encouraged to participate actively. HOPE has also printed its own health brochures, which are distributed to the students. It is also planning to offer structured courses on nutrition, stress management and home emergencies etc. Various modules have been created for the different age groups. The senior section, middle school and junior section are dealt with separately according to their caliber and knowledge.

So far all the programmes conducted have received an over whelming response. The enthusiasm and general knowledge quotient of the children was found to be amazing.

For the future, HOPE is looking forward to spread its message to even more institutes.
